A company that is developing a DNA identification system for art says large-scale fake art scams have become so sophisticated that they are making it difficult to protect artists and their original works.
IdenteArt is working with the CSIRO to develop the new identification system to protect original works.
The company has also made a submission to a Senate inquiry into the Indigenous arts and craft sector.
IdenteArt's J Easterly Wood says fake art operations in China have developed mass production methods to reproduce artworks.
"So the problem now is the technologies have become so advanced for replicating canvas-to-canvas prints and other things so that there is this blur between what was meant to be tourist and what was meant to be fine art."
